In a chilling case that underscores the dark side of digital technology, two cyber fraudsters have been arrested in Telangana for their role in a fake digital arrest scam that tragically led to a woman's death. The incident, the first of its kind since the recent directives from DGP Dr. Jitender, highlights the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the urgent need for enhanced public awareness and security measures.
The prime accused, Shankar, and his accomplice, Vishwas Dattatraya Miraje, allegedly extorted a staggering 6.6 lakh from the victim, a retired CSRMO from MN Area Hospital in Malakpet. Posing as Bengaluru police officials, they contacted her via WhatsApp, falsely accusing her of human trafficking and providing forged documents from high-profile institutions. This psychological manipulation led to the victim transferring a significant sum from her pension account.
Despite the victim's compliance, the accused continued their intimidation, resulting in severe distress and, ultimately, a fatal cardiac arrest. The accused's audacity was further evident as they persisted in their demands even after the victim's demise. ACP R.G. Siva Maruthi revealed that the duo is suspected of involvement in similar cases across Telangana and Gujarat, indicating a broader criminal network.
The incident has triggered a swift response from the Cyberabad police, who have booked the accused under the BNS. The victim's son, who lodged the complaint, and the wider community are now awaiting justice and reassurance that such heinous crimes will not go unpunished. This case serves as a stark reminder of the evolving threats in the digital realm and the imperative for authorities and citizens alike to remain vigilant and proactive in combating cybercrime.
