Hemant Soren was invited by Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan to form the government after Champai Soren resigned from the chief ministerial position, just five months into his term. Hemant Soren's oath-taking ceremony was initially reported to be scheduled for July 7. Soren used the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the BJP-led central government, claiming that an "anti-democracy conspiracy" by political opponents had been thwarted, and expressing gratitude to the Governor.
Hemant Soren’s political journey has been marked by turmoil. He was released from Birsa Munda Jail on June 28 after spending nearly five months in custody, following bail granted by the Jharkhand High Court in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. Soren had resigned from his chief minister position before his arrest on January 31. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him on allegations of involvement in a Rs 600-crore land scam and associated money laundering activities.
Champai Soren’s brief tenure as Jharkhand’s chief minister began on February 2, following Hemant Soren’s arrest. His appointment surprised many who had expected Kalpana Soren, Hemant Soren’s wife, to assume the role. Champai Soren explained that his resignation was in alignment with their alliance's decision that Hemant Soren should lead once he returned. He expressed confidence in Hemant Soren's leadership and indicated that the details of the government formation would be shared soon.
Hemant Soren’s political comeback included accusations against the ED of spreading “selective misinformation” after a raid on his Delhi residence. The raid resulted in the seizure of Rs 36 lakh in cash and a BMW car, assets Soren denied owning. Despite the controversies, Hemant Soren's reinstatement as Jharkhand’s chief minister marks a significant chapter in the state's political landscape, promising further developments in the near future.
