The Sashakt Panchayat-Netri Abhiyan was launched in New Delhi during a workshop for Women Elected Representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions. This initiative coincided with International Women’s Day 2025 and aims to enhance leadership skills and decision-making capabilities among women in grassroots governance. By strengthening their role in local governance, the program seeks to build their capacity as leaders and ensure active participation in decision-making processes. This effort is part of a broader strategy to promote gender equality and inclusive governance.
Building on the success of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment, which led to the election of over 1.4 million women in Panchayati Raj Institutions, the initiative seeks to further increase female representation in governance. Many states have already seen women surpass reservation quotas, indicating a positive trend in gender inclusivity. However, challenges persist, particularly with the culture of Mukhiya Pati, where male relatives often assume control over decision-making, undermining the authority of elected women leaders. Addressing such barriers is crucial for empowering women to assert their leadership roles independently.
Empowered women in governance have been instrumental in improving investment in essential services such as health, education, and sanitation. Their leadership contributes to sustainable community development and national progress. The Sashakt Panchayat-Netri Abhiyan represents a significant step towards fostering inclusive governance by creating women-friendly Gram Panchayats and encouraging female representatives to take charge of their leadership roles. Through this initiative, the government aims to strengthen women’s political participation and promote a more equitable society.
