The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy has been rife with discussions about India's consistent performance, particularly regarding their exclusive use of the Dubai International Cricket Stadium as their home base. This unique situation arose after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declined to send the team to Pakistan due to security concerns, leading to all of India's matches being scheduled in Dubai.

Mohammed Shami's Perspective

Indian pace spearhead Mohammed Shami has openly acknowledged the benefits of playing all matches at a single venue. He emphasized that familiarity with the pitch and conditions has been advantageous for the team. Shami stated, "It has definitely helped us because we know the conditions and the behaviour of the pitch. It is a plus point that you are playing all the matches at one venue."

Shami's performance in the tournament has been commendable. He claimed a five-wicket haul in India's opening win over Bangladesh and has bowled with pace and accuracy throughout the competition.

Operating as India's lone frontline pacer, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami has shouldered significant responsibility, leading the pace attack with young Harshit Rana and all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

Gautam Gambhir's Rebuttal

Contrasting Shami's viewpoint, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has dismissed claims that the team has had an undue advantage by playing exclusively in Dubai. He argued that Dubai is as neutral a venue for India as it is for any other team. Gambhir remarked, "First of all, this is as neutral a venue for us as it is for any other team. What undue advantage? We haven't practised here even for a day. We're practising at the ICC Academy."

Gambhir further emphasized that the team had not conducted any training sessions at the Dubai International Stadium, instead preparing at the ICC Cricket Academy, which has different conditions. He criticized those suggesting an unfair advantage, labeling them as "perpetual cribbers" who need to "grow up."

Opposition's Viewpoint

Australia's captain, Steve Smith, acknowledged that the Dubai wicket suited India's playing style, benefiting their spinners and seamers. However, he refrained from attributing Australia's semi-final loss solely to India's familiarity with the venue. Smith stated, "India obviously played some really good cricket here. The surface kind of suits their style with the spinners that they've got and the seamers ... . They played well, they outplayed ... ."

The differing opinions within the Indian camp highlight the complexity of the debate surrounding venue familiarity and its impact on performance. While Shami acknowledges the advantages of playing at a single venue, Gambhir maintains that the team has not benefited unfairly. As India prepares for the Champions Trophy final, these discussions underscore the multifaceted nature of cricketing strategies and the perceptions of fairness in tournament settings.
