In a significant operation, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has dismantled an extensive drug network spanning Maharashtra and Gujarat, seizing a substantial 60 kilograms of high-grade mephedrone and arresting six individuals, including a former Air India pilot. This bust, which took place on October 7, sheds light on the intricate world of drug trafficking and the diverse backgrounds of those involved.
The operation commenced with a tip-off from the Naval Intelligence Bureau in Jamnagar, Gujarat, regarding suspicious activities. The NCB, under the leadership of Mumbai Zonal Director Amit Ghawate, coordinated with multiple agencies to gather intelligence on the targeted individuals. This collaborative effort led to the discovery of a bulk drug consignment being smuggled from Gujarat to Maharashtra.
On October 3, NCB agents, maintaining a low profile, arrested four individuals and confiscated 10 kilograms of mephedrone. The detainees included Bhaskar V. from Jamnagar and three Mumbai residents: S.G. Mahida, a former pilot; S.M. Chowdhury; and P.D. Muthu. Subsequent interrogations exposed a web of drug connections, leading to the arrest of the syndicate's kingpin, M.I. Ali, and his associate, M.F. Chisty, on Thursday, along with an additional 50 kilograms of the stimulant.
Amit Ghawate revealed that the seized mephedrone from both states shared the same quality, linking it to previous operations by the Mumbai Police. This bust highlights the growing concern over the spread of new psychoactive substances, such as mephedrone, commonly known on the streets as 'meow meow' or M-cat. The involvement of a former pilot and the syndicate's interstate operations underscore the complexity of the drug trade and the need for continued vigilance and collaboration among law enforcement agencies.
