Fishermen's Plight: Puducherry CM Appeals for Swift Action

The Chief Minister of Puducherry, N. Rangaswamy, has made a fervent plea to the central government, urging them to intervene in the detention of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities. This issue has been a longstanding concern, with over 80 fishermen currently held in Sri Lankan custody, according to the Chief Minister.

Rangaswamy, in a recent statement, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the detained fishermen are facing dire conditions and that their prolonged detention is causing immense distress to their families. He highlighted that the fishermen, hailing from Puducherry and neighboring Tamil Nadu, ventured into the Palk Bay and were subsequently arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

The Chief Minister's appeal comes amid growing tensions between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen over fishing rights in the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. The disputed waters have been a source of conflict for decades, with both countries claiming historical rights to the rich fishing grounds. The issue has led to frequent arrests and detentions of fishermen from both nations, often for extended periods, causing significant hardship.

In his communication with the central government, Rangaswamy requested immediate steps to secure the release of the detained fishermen and their boats. He also emphasized the need for a permanent solution to the fishing dispute, suggesting that bilateral talks between India and Sri Lanka could lead to a mutually beneficial agreement. The Chief Minister's office confirmed that they are awaiting a response from the central authorities and are hopeful for a swift and positive resolution to this long-standing issue, which has affected the livelihoods and well-being of countless fishermen and their families.
