Hyderabad's Alarming Rise in Fraud and Forgery

Hyderabad, a bustling city in India, has earned an unenviable distinction. According of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the city topped the list for forgery, cheating, and fraud cases in 2023, leaving other major cities in its shadow. With a staggering 4,090 cases related to these offenses, the city's streets seem to be lined with deception and trickery.

The NCRB's report paints a vivid picture of Hyderabad's predicament. Among the 16 major cities compared, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, Hyderabad's numbers are particularly concerning. The city's cognizable crimes rate stands at 332.3, with a charge-sheeting rate of 67%, indicating a substantial volume of reported crimes. The report further reveals that Hyderabad also leads in bank frauds and ATM theft cases, with 709 and 156 cases, respectively, leaving residents and authorities alike grappling with the implications.

In the realm of financial crimes, Hyderabad's position is equally unsettling. It registered the highest number of credit and debit card fraud cases in 2023, with 211 incidents, far surpassing Mumbai and Chennai. This surge in financial deception raises questions about the security of digital transactions and the potential vulnerabilities in the city's banking systems.

Despite the focus on financial and property-related crimes, Hyderabad's overall crime landscape is diverse. The city recorded a relatively lower number of bodily offenses, with 94 cases under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, road accidents and negligence resulted in a significant number of deaths, with 368 cases reported. The NCRB's data also sheds light on women's safety, with 191 sexual harassment and 592 kidnapping cases, including two for ransom, a stark reminder of the challenges faced by women in the city.
