Telangana's Alarming Suicide Rate: Family Issues Take a Heavy Toll

In a concerning revelation, Telangana's suicide rate has reached a staggering 27.7 per lakh population, with family problems emerging as a leading cause. The state's suicide count, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, stands at 10,580 for 2023, with a significant 44% attributed to family-related issues. This statistic is part of a broader national trend, where family troubles account for 31.9% of the country's total 1,71,418 suicides.

The NCRB's 'Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2023' report paints a grim picture, ranking Telangana fifth in suicide rates nationally. The state's rate is nearly double the national average of 12.7 suicides per lakh population. This surge in suicides is not isolated; it reflects a 6% increase from 2022, outpacing the national growth rate of 0.28%. Hyderabad, the state's capital, recorded 659 suicides, an 8.5 per lakh population rate, marking a 21.1% rise from the previous year.

While family issues are the primary driver, other factors contribute to this crisis. Illnesses account for 18% of suicides, with drug abuse and alcoholism claiming 119 lives, including 33 women. Property disputes, unemployment, and poverty also play a role, albeit less significantly. The gender breakdown reveals a male-dominated statistic, with 8,236 male victims compared to 2,342 females and two transpersons.

Telangana's high suicide rate demands immediate attention and action. The state government, in collaboration with mental health professionals and social workers, must address this crisis by implementing preventive measures, providing accessible support services, and fostering a culture of mental health awareness and support.
