The Supreme Court of India is addressing multiple petitions related to alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 exam, particularly concerning a question paper leak. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, alongside Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is scrutinizing the matter.
The Court emphasized the necessity of a re-test if the integrity of the exam has been compromised, particularly if the leak spread via social media. Chief Justice Chandrachud asserted, "One thing is clear: a leak of the question paper has taken place." The Court urged for clarity on the extent of the breach to determine if it warrants a complete re-examination.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Central government argued against scrapping the exam without evidence of a large-scale breach. They contended that cancelling the exam would jeopardize the futures of numerous honest candidates. The NTA labeled the potential cancellation as “counterproductive” and “harmful to larger public interest.”
The Court has directed the NTA, Centre, and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file detailed affidavits. The CBI, which has already made several arrests related to the case, is to submit a status report by July 10. The Supreme Court will continue its deliberations on July 11, weighing the evidence to decide on the potential re-test.
In response to the controversy, intellectuals in Kolkata protested against the alleged irregularities, reflecting public discontent with the current handling of the NEET-UG exam process.
