In a significant step towards modernizing law enforcement, 30 police stations across Telangana have been handpicked for an ambitious internal reform project. This initiative, led by the Indian Police Foundation (IPF), aims to enhance police efficiency and public perception through strategic changes. The project's launch was marked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Telangana Police Department and the IPF on Monday, setting the stage for a transformative journey.
The initial phase will focus on 15 police stations in the Cyberabad Commissionerate and an equal number in Sangareddy district. A series of public consultations will be the cornerstone of this project, engaging various stakeholders, including complainants, victims, accused individuals, NGOs, and police personnel. These meetings aim to identify critical challenges and areas requiring immediate attention. The feedback will be coupled with insights from successful initiatives in other states, such as e-FIR and community policing, to create a comprehensive reform blueprint.
Dr Jitender, Telangana's Director General of Police, emphasized the project's potential to introduce innovative practices and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) recommendations from across India. He highlighted how these additions will complement existing Telangana Police initiatives like Mee Seva, QR codes, and the T-Safe application, designed to ensure women's safety during travel. The project's structured training component for police personnel and its evaluation by an independent third party further ensure its effectiveness and transparency.
With the project already underway in Punjab and Tamil Nadu, and IPF's state chapters established in several other regions, Telangana's inclusion marks a significant expansion. The anticipated outcome is a more efficient, transparent, and citizen-centric police force, setting a new standard for internal reforms in the country.
