Surat’s Drive for Inclusive Food Security

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Surat Food Security Saturation Campaign Programme in Limbayat, Surat, aiming to extend the benefits of the National Food Security Act to over 2.3 lakh beneficiaries. This initiative highlights Surat’s commitment to unity and collective progress, ensuring food security for the poor and marginalized. The campaign seeks to make food assistance more inclusive and fair, identifying over 2.5 lakh new beneficiaries, including elderly individuals and differently-abled persons, to provide them with free rations and nutritious meals.

The government has implemented several initiatives to enhance food security, including the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, which provided relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. The PM Poshan Scheme ensures nutritious meals for school children, while the Saksham Anganwadi Program and PM Matru Vandana Yojana focus on maternal and child health through financial support and improved nutrition. Addressing malnutrition and anaemia remains a priority, with cleanliness and hygiene playing a crucial role in public health. Surat has actively contributed to this effort through its commitment to sanitation, while national initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and “Har Ghar Jal” campaign provide clean water and improved living conditions.

To support financial inclusion, the government has launched schemes such as “One Nation, One Ration Card,” enabling beneficiaries to access food rations anywhere in India. The Mudra Yojana facilitates unsecured loans for small businesses, while the PM SVANidhi Yojana provides financial assistance to street vendors. These measures aim to strengthen the economic foundation of underprivileged communities. The middle class also benefits from new tax relief measures, with revised tax slabs allowing families to retain more earnings, improve their financial stability, and invest in their futures.

Surat’s rapid economic growth has positioned it as a center for entrepreneurship, particularly in the textile and chemical industries. The government continues to support MSMEs through financial assistance and developmental programs. Major infrastructure projects like the Surat Metro and the expansion of the airport terminal are enhancing connectivity, contributing to the city’s overall development. Women’s empowerment remains a key focus, with the Prime Minister encouraging women to share their achievements and actively participate in various sectors. Special programs and events celebrate their contributions, reinforcing their role in the country’s progress.
