Trump’s Shift Towards Diplomacy on Iran Nuclear Deal Amid Regional Changes

In late 2024, former US President Donald Trump expressed a willingness to renegotiate the Iran nuclear deal, signaling a shift towards diplomacy in light of changing political and economic conditions. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), established in 2015, was designed to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, in 2018, Trump withdrew the US, citing flaws in the agreement, such as its failure to address Iran’s ballistic missile program and regional influence.

Following the US withdrawal, Iran began increasing its uranium enrichment and faced severe economic struggles, worsened by sanctions and internal unrest. By 2024, under President Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran acknowledged the dire state of its economy and showed a willingness to engage in diplomatic negotiations with the US for sanctions relief.

The evolving geopolitical landscape in the Middle East also plays a role in this shift. Improved relations between Iran and Gulf states, combined with a decline in Israel’s popularity in the Arab world, provide a new context for diplomacy. However, challenges remain, particularly surrounding trust issues and the sunset clauses in the original JCPOA. Trump’s approach aims to leverage these regional changes to find a diplomatic breakthrough, despite the complex political realities
