Celebrating Women’s Progress: OECD’s Glass-Ceiling Index Highlights Gender Equality at Work

On International Women’s Day, The Economist released its annual Glass-Ceiling Index, ranking 29 OECD countries on their support for women in the workplace. The OECD, a group of 38 democratic nations with free-market economies, aims to promote economic growth and equality. The Glass-Ceiling Index assesses various factors, including women’s education, labor force participation, pay gaps, management roles, and political representation.

Sweden claimed the top spot, surpassing Iceland, which had held the position for two years. While Iceland remains a global leader in gender equality, its drop in women in management contributed to the shift. The index highlighted key advancements, including a rise in women’s participation in the labor force, now at 66.6%, and increased representation on corporate boards, which reached 33%. Politically, women’s representation in parliaments grew to an average of 34%, with notable progress in Japan and Britain.

However, challenges persist in countries like Japan, Turkey, and South Korea, where deep-rooted societal norms hinder women’s leadership roles. These nations still face significant barriers, including wage gaps and limited representation in both corporate and political spheres. The OECD’s report underscores the progress made but emphasizes the ongoing need for change to achieve full gender equality in the workplace.
