In a significant development in the war against drugs, Punjab Police has made a series of impressive strides in the last seven months. The numbers speak for themselves: over 31,000 drug smugglers arrested and a staggering 1,359.5 kg of heroin seized. This intensive operation, known as the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign, was initiated on March 1 and has since targeted the drug menace plaguing the state.
The campaign's scope is extensive, with daily operations conducted simultaneously across all 28 police districts in Punjab. Led by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the police force has demonstrated unwavering commitment. The operation's success is evident in the sheer volume of illicit substances recovered, including opium, poppy husk, charas, ganja, crystal methamphetamine, and a substantial quantity of intoxicant tablets. The total drug money seized during this period amounts to Rs 12.73 crore.
On a single day, October 1, the police conducted raids at 392 locations statewide, resulting in the arrest of 81 smugglers and the seizure of various drugs and drug money. This coordinated effort involved over 150 police teams, comprising more than 1,200 personnel and supervised by 79 gazetted officers. The operation's impact is further underscored by the filing of 63 FIRs.
Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has set a clear agenda for the state's law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the goal of a drug-free Punjab. To oversee this ambitious undertaking, a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, chaired by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, has been established. The state government's comprehensive strategy, focusing on enforcement, de-addiction, and prevention, aims to tackle the drug problem at its roots.
