Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te has called for stronger measures to counter increasing Chinese infiltration, espionage, and psychological warfare targeting the island. He highlighted various incidents where China has attempted to subvert Taiwan’s defenses, obtain sensitive information, and weaken public confidence in national security. Lai emphasized the need for stricter legal safeguards to prevent such activities.
China has refused official contact with Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and frequently sends ships and aircraft near the island to intimidate its population and strain its military. Recently, a Chinese woman married to a Taiwanese citizen was expelled for posting content on social media claiming China could conquer Taiwan quickly and praising Chinese leadership. Her actions were deemed illegal under Taiwan’s laws on aiding the enemy, though she may reapply for residency in five years.
In addition to social media influence, several incidents have involved Taiwanese artists and influencers in China echoing Beijing’s claims over Taiwan. Cases of retired Taiwanese military personnel passing information to Chinese agents and attempting to recruit spies within the island’s armed forces have also raised concerns. Taiwan has been on high alert as Beijing continues its efforts to assert sovereignty over the island, which has operated with de-facto independence since separating from China in 1949.
