BJP Tamil Nadu president K.Annamalai and several party leaders were detained by the police on Monday aheadof their planned protest against alleged irregularities in TASMAC, thestate-run liquor retailer. The BJP had announced a demonstration at TASMAC’sheadquarters in Chennai to highlight what the Enforcement Directorate (ED)recently alleged as Rs. 1,000 crore worth of irregularities. Among thosedetained were Mahila Morcha chief and Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan,along with senior leaders Vinoj P. Selvam and Amar Prasad Reddy.
Annamalai accused TASMAC ofengaging in Rs. 1,000 crore worth of fraudulent activities and affirmed theBJP’s resolve to continue protesting against the issue. The ED had earlierclaimed to have uncovered extensive irregularities in TASMAC operations, includingmanipulated tender processes and unaccounted cash transactions totaling Rs.1,000 crore involving distillery companies.
The allegations emergedfollowing ED raids on March 6, targeting TASMAC employees, distillery offices,and plants, which reportedly provided evidence of corruption.
