Tamil Nadu Budget Features 'Ru' Symbol as a Testament to Language Policy Commitment: CM Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Ministerand DMK President M.K. Stalin on Sunday defended the use of the Tamil letter'Ru' in place of the Indian rupee symbol in the 2025-26 budget, asserting itunderscores the government's commitment to its language policy. In his "UngalilOruvan" (One Among You) video address, Stalin criticized those who opposedthe move, particularly targeting the BJP, stating, "Those who don't likeTamil made it a big issue." He also took a jibe at Union Finance MinisterNirmala Sitharaman for addressing the symbol controversy while ignoring TamilNadu's demands for funds.

Stalin highlighted that the'Ru' symbol, representing 'Rubaai,' the Tamil word for rupee, showcases thegovernment's dedication to the Tamil language. Responding to criticism, henoted that the abbreviation 'Rs' is widely accepted in English without contention.He added, "Our budget and Tamil have garnered national attention andacclaim."

The BJP criticized the DMK'sdecision, claiming it sparked unnecessary controversy. The Tamil Nadugovernment, however, reiterated its decades-old two-language policy of Tamiland English, resisting what it perceives as the BJP-led central government's pushfor Hindi through the National Education Policy.

Stalin further emphasizedthe DMK government's achievements, including managing the state's debt andreceiving praise for the budget. He reaffirmed Tamil Nadu's ambition to becomea USD 1 trillion economy by 2030 while addressing challenges such as potentialLok Sabha seat reductions post-delimitation and central fund allocation issues.The CM welcomed constructive criticism but dismissed opposition attacks asdriven by vendetta.
