NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and her crewmate Barry Wilmore are set to return to Earth on March 16, 2025, after an extended stay of nearly nine months on the International Space Station (ISS). Their return was delayed due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which was initially supposed to bring them back much earlier
Williams and Wilmore’s return depends on the successful launch of Crew 10, scheduled for March 12, 2025. If there are delays, NASA has backup dates on March 13 and 14, which could push their return to March 17 or 18.
During their extended mission, they remained in high spirits, celebrating Thanksgiving in space in November 2024. There was also some controversy in February 2025 when former US President Donald Trump claimed they were “virtually abandoned” in space, but Williams and Wilmore dismissed the claims, stating they were safe and never felt stranded
Williams hinted that this could be her final space mission, expressing sadness at the thought of not returning to the ISS again. Before leaving, she mentioned leaving something behind for the next crew as a small mystery for them to find
For their return, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon will bring them back to Earth, as part of NASA’s collaboration with the private space company.
