In a significant operation, the Thiruvananthapuram Rural Dansaf team has dealt a substantial blow to drug trafficking in the region, arresting a four-member gang with a substantial quantity of MDMA, valued at over Rs 15 lakh. This bust, which occurred on Friday, highlights the growing sophistication of drug networks and the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the illicit trade.

The gang, comprising Shami, Muhammed Kalfan, Ashiq, and Al Ameen, had been under secret surveillance for an extended period. Their arrest at Chenkavila, near Pozhiyoor, was the culmination of a well-coordinated effort involving multiple police units. The team's vigilance led to the discovery of 308 grams of MDMA, initially found on one of the accused, a woman, during a routine body search. This initial find prompted further investigation, leading to the recovery of an additional 133 grams.

The group's modus operandi was particularly cunning. They utilized rented cars and disguised themselves as families on leisure trips, a tactic that helped them evade scrutiny in other states. The MDMA, sourced from Bengaluru, was hidden in small packets concealed in the woman's dress, a strategy that had previously enabled them to smuggle drugs into Kerala undetected. This operation's success is a testament to the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration and the use of intelligence-led policing.

"This is a major racket, and we believe more individuals are involved," stated Rural District Police Chief K S Sudarshan, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation. The operation's impact is evident in the numbers: 1,574 individuals examined, 57 cases registered for narcotics possession, and 59 arrests made, with seizures including various drugs.
