Northeast India's Drug Bust: Uncovering a Multi-Crore Heroin Haul

In a significant blow to cross-border narcotics smuggling, the Assam Rifles have seized a substantial amount of heroin, valued at a staggering Rs 11.40 crore, in Mizoram's Champhai district. This operation, which took place in the dark of night along the border with Myanmar, resulted in the arrest of three suspected drug peddlers, including a woman. The intelligence-led raid underscores the ongoing battle against the illicit drug trade in India's northeastern region.

The operation, conducted in the World Bank Road area near Zokhawthar, a border town, was a strategic response to intelligence regarding drug trafficking activities. The troops' vigilance paid off as they witnessed three individuals suspiciously searching for a hidden package, leading to their immediate detention. The subsequent search uncovered a substantial 1.377 kg of heroin, a highly valuable and dangerous narcotic.

The arrested individuals, identified as Zarzosanga Joseph Lalmuansanga Malsawmkimi and two others, were handed over to the Customs and Narcotics Department for further legal proceedings. This successful operation highlights the vulnerability of India's northeastern border, particularly Mizoram, to drug trafficking from Myanmar's Chin State, a known hub for heroin and other illegal substances.

The crackdown in Mizoram is part of a broader regional effort to combat drug trafficking. In Tripura, Chief Minister Manik Saha recently informed the state assembly of the significant progress made in anti-narcotics operations, resulting in numerous arrests and the destruction of seized drugs. These coordinated efforts by security forces and state governments aim to dismantle the persistent drug trafficking networks along India's eastern borders.
