China Conducts Large-Scale Military Drill Near Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

China has conducted a large-scale military drill near Taiwan, with 43 out of 59 ships, planes, and drones crossing into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry monitored the situation and responded by deploying aircraft, navy ships, and coastal missile defenses. While such missions occur daily, this operation was unusually large, and no confrontations were reported.

China stated that the drills were a response to recent actions and statements from the US and Taiwan. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning defended the exercises as necessary to protect national sovereignty, accusing the US of sending misleading signals by altering its language on Taiwan in official documents. Beijing also criticized Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te, who recently described mainland China as a foreign hostile force and warned about Chinese espionage efforts.

The Taiwan Strait, a crucial global trade route, remains a contested area. While China does not interfere with civilian shipping, it frequently opposes military movements by the US and its allies. The Group of 7 (G7) recently condemned China’s actions in the region, calling them provocative and dangerous. In response, China dismissed the statement as arrogant and prejudiced. Amid increasing tensions, Taiwan has been strengthening its defense capabilities, ordering new military equipment from the US and enhancing its domestic defense industry, including the production of submarines.
