In a powerful display of unity, the National Association of Seadogs (NAS), a group also known as the Pyrates Confraternity, joined forces with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to tackle a pressing issue affecting Nigeria's youth: drug abuse. The collaboration, which took to the streets of Abeokuta, aimed to educate and sensitise the community, especially the younger generation, about the perils of illicit substances.
The campaign, aptly named 'Global March,' saw participants walk through the city's bustling streets, from Kuto to Stadium, Iwe-Iroyin, Phone Tarmac, Omida, and Sapon. This event, with its theme 'Louder Together: Campaign Against Drug Abuse and Homelessness,' served as a clarion call to address the alarming rate of drug abuse among out-of-school children, estimated at a staggering 50%. Ganiyu Omitogun, a representative of NAS, emphasised the urgency of the situation, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to prioritise policies addressing this crisis.
The march was not just a symbolic gesture but a platform to educate the public about the health risks associated with drug abuse. Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Morakinyo Oluseyi from the NDLEA Ogun Command, highlighted the partnership's goal: to ensure that the dangers of drug use are understood by all, especially those at risk. The event shed light on the various factors driving drug abuse, including broken homes, lack of quality education, unemployment, and peer pressure, urging both the government and individuals to take proactive measures.
As the march concluded, the message was clear: the fight against drug abuse requires a collective effort. The collaboration between NAS and NDLEA not only raised awareness but also emphasised the need for continued education and policy interventions to safeguard Nigeria's youth from the devastating effects of drug abuse.
