Hyderabad's Cyber Crime Police Expose Online Investment Scams

In a recent alert, the Hyderabad City Police have shed light on a surge in online investment scams, with victims losing substantial amounts of money. These scams, primarily targeting unsuspecting individuals on popular messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, as well as social media platforms, have raised concerns among authorities and citizens alike.

The modus operandi of these fraudsters is simple yet effective. They impersonate financial experts or company representatives, luring people with promises of substantial returns on investments. The scammers employ fake trading apps and websites, which initially display impressive but fabricated profits to gain the trust of their victims. Once an individual invests, the real scheme unfolds. The scammers demand additional payments, citing taxes or withdrawal fees, and when paid, they either vanish or intimidate the victim with fake legal repercussions.

The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have reported two significant incidents. In one case, a person was duped of 6.32 lakh rupees in the NFM Capital Markets scam, while another fraudulent app, Costa Well Grown, resulted in a collective loss of 43 lakh rupees for its victims. These scams highlight the importance of vigilance in the digital realm.

To combat these fraudulent activities, the police advise the public to exercise caution. They recommend avoiding unknown investment links and offers from strangers, especially on social media platforms. Verifying the authenticity of trading apps and websites before downloading or using them is crucial. Additionally, the police emphasize the need for citizens to protect their personal and banking information, urging them to check if trading platforms are registered with SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) via their official website. The authorities encourage victims to come forward and report such incidents to the Cyber Crime Helpline or file complaints online, ensuring that these scammers are brought to justice.
