Earth’s Core May Be Changing Shape

Scientists have recently discovered that Earth's inner core is changing shape, deforming in ways they never expected. This finding builds on previous research that showed the inner core had slowed its rotation and even reversed its direction relative to the outer layers of the planet.

The inner core, a solid sphere primarily composed of iron and nickel, is surrounded by the liquid outer core. Researchers analyzing seismic waves generated by earthquakes found that since 2010, the inner core has undergone significant changes. One theory suggests that the liquid outer core may be exerting uneven pressure on the solid inner core, causing it to deform in a manner similar to landslides on Earth's surface.

These changes could have significant implications, particularly for Earth's magnetosphere, which shields the planet from harmful solar radiation. However, scientists are still uncertain about the exact cause of this deformation. More research is needed to understand the forces at play and how widespread these structural changes may be.
