Mindanao Shaken by Powerful Earthquake, Tsunami Alerts Triggered

The ground shook violently as a powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippines, sending residents into a panic and triggering tsunami alerts along the coast. The magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit near the town of Manay in Davao Oriental, Mindanao, at 8:05 AM local time, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). This powerful tremor was felt across a wide area, including the cities of Davao, General Santos, and as far as the capital region of Metro Manila.

The US Tsunami Warning System promptly issued a tsunami warning for the Philippines, Indonesia, and Palau, with the potential for waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) above the tide level. Residents in coastal areas were urged to evacuate to higher ground, with the threat of potentially destructive waves looming. The earthquake's epicenter was located 123 kilometers (76 miles) southeast of Davao City at a depth of 64.1 kilometers. This depth is considered shallow, which can result in more intense shaking at the surface.

Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. stated, "The earthquake was caused by the movement of the Philippine Sea Plate, which is subducting beneath the Sunda Plate. This is a highly active seismic zone, and we are closely monitoring the situation for any potential aftershocks or further seismic activity." The agency also reported that the earthquake triggered landslides in the mountainous region, adding to the potential hazards. As the region braces for potential aftershocks and assesses the damage, the focus now shifts to ensuring the safety of residents and implementing effective disaster response measures.
