Combating Online Scams: The DoT-WhatsApp Partnership

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India has teamed up with WhatsApp to fight online scams and spam through the ScamSeBacho campaign. This initiative is a part of India’s larger digital safety strategy aimed at educating citizens on how to identify and report fraudulent communications. As online fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated, the collaboration seeks to enhance public awareness and strengthen the nation’s digital security.

The main objective of this partnership is to empower citizens with the knowledge needed to recognise and report scams. The campaign includes train-the-trainer workshops, which will train DoT officials, Sanchar Mitras, and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). This effort will help spread awareness at the grassroots level and improve public response to cyber threats.

Furthermore, WhatsApp will collaborate with the DoT to expand the Sanchar Saathi initiative, a citizen-centric programme that allows users to report suspected fraud, manage mobile connections, and trace lost devices. The DoT’s Digital Intelligence Unit will play a crucial role by facilitating the exchange of intelligence among banks, telecom operators, and law enforcement to tackle misuse of telecom resources.

To ensure accessibility, WhatsApp will produce educational materials in multiple regional languages, including Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil. By reaching diverse communities, this campaign aims to provide comprehensive digital safety knowledge across India.
