In April 2024, Y.S. Sharmila Reddy, President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, openly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly dividing people along religious lines. She also accused Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N. Chandrababu Naidu of aligning with the BJP, thereby neglecting the state's developmental needs.

She claimed that both parties failed to secure Special Category Status for the state, a designation that could have spurred significant development. Sharmila accused Jagan Mohan Reddy of not fulfilling his electoral promises, including the provision of 2.25 lakh jobs and the implementation of total prohibition. She further alleged that the state government was involved in corrupt practices, such as the distribution of substandard liquor, adversely affecting public health.

Call for Caste-Based Census

In November 2024, Sharmila advocated for a caste-based census in Andhra Pradesh to ensure equitable resource distribution among various communities. She highlighted the Congress party's commitment to the welfare of backward classes and urged the state government to conduct a caste survey. Sharmila also accused the BJP of reneging on its 2017 promise to conduct such a census, suggesting that the party prioritized upper-caste interests over those of backward communities.

Response to 'Insignificant' Remark

In November 2024, Sharmila responded to Jagan Mohan Reddy's dismissal of the Congress party as "insignificant." She countered by labeling the YSRCP as the real insignificant party, accusing its members of failing to address public issues in the legislative assembly. Sharmila challenged YSRCP legislators to resign if they could not effectively represent their constituents, emphasizing the need for active participation in governance.
