Malaysian Customs Seizes Massive Cannabis Haul

In a significant blow to drug trafficking, the Malaysian Customs Department has thwarted an attempt to smuggle an astonishing 1,016.29 kg of cannabis, valued at RM98 million, through a series of operations in the Klang Valley and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). This recent success highlights the ongoing battle against the illicit drug trade, which often targets international markets with sophisticated smuggling tactics.

The operations, led by KLIA Customs, resulted in the arrest of five individuals and the interception of cannabis in various stages of transportation. The first case, on October 1, involved a local man at KLIA Terminal 1, whose baggage inspection revealed 21.04 kg of cannabis hidden among his belongings. This seizure, worth RM2.06 million, showcases the vigilance of customs officers in detecting even relatively smaller drug consignments.

The subsequent cases indicate a more extensive smuggling operation. On September 27, authorities intercepted 220.32 kg of cannabis, valued at RM21.59 million, in a courier truck bound for Europe. This was followed by raids on logistics warehouses in Shah Alam and Subang Jaya, where 464.58 kg of cannabis, estimated at RM45.53 million, was discovered. The final operation on October 3 seized 294.35 kg of cannabis, worth RM28.85 million, at the KLIA Free Zone export gate, destined for overseas markets.

Zulkifli Muhammad, KLIA Customs director, attributed these successes to the department's Enforcement Division and the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS). He stated, "The syndicate attempted to conceal the drugs in boxes labelled as premium towel brands, sealed in airtight plastic to evade detection." This sophisticated tactic underscores the challenges faced by customs authorities in combating drug trafficking, which continues to adapt and innovate. The ongoing investigations will provide further insights into this criminal network and its operations.
