As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 approaches, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have hinted that their record teenage signing, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, might not get a chance to play this season. The 13-year-old prodigy, signed for a whopping INR 1.10 crore at the auction, has been making waves with his performances at the domestic and international youth levels.
A Phenomenal Rise in Cricket
Suryavanshi has been nothing short of extraordinary over the past year. He announced himself on the domestic stage with a blistering 71 off 42 balls for Bihar against Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, becoming the youngest Indian to score a List A fifty. He continued his dominance on the international circuit by smashing a 58-ball century against Australia in Chennai, the fastest by an Indian in youth Test cricket. Additionally, his two crucial half-centuries in the ACC U19 Asia Cup played a pivotal role in India’s journey to the final.
Will RR Play Suryavanshi in IPL 2025?
Despite his stunning performances, RR's batting coach Vikram Rathour suggested that the teenager’s IPL debut is uncertain, emphasizing that team dynamics, match conditions, and strategy would determine his inclusion.
“I am not sure if we will use him or not, it will depend on the strategy, the surface, and the opposition. He has a lot of ability, and I have hardly ever seen a player this young with such power. The signs are great, and if he works hard, I am sure he will be a big player,” Rathour said.
While RR remains excited about Suryavanshi’s future, his immediate role in the playing XI remains uncertain.
Rathour Reunites with Rahul Dravid at RR
The veteran coach, who joined RR in September 2024, is thrilled to reunite with head coach Rahul Dravid, a partnership that saw India clinch the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Rathour expressed excitement about working with Dravid again, saying,
“There won’t be much difference in our approach. We have worked together before, and I enjoyed my tenure with him. The IPL is a shorter tournament, but working with the same group for three years allows us to build a strong foundation.”
What Lies Ahead for Suryavanshi?
With the IPL 2025 season kicking off soon, it remains to be seen whether RR will unleash Suryavanshi or opt for a cautious approach. Regardless of his IPL debut timeline, the cricketing world is watching closely as the young sensation continues his meteoric rise.
