Global Happiness Report 2025: Key Insights on Well-being and Social Connections

The World Happiness Report 2025, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, ranks countries based on citizens’ self-assessed life evaluations. This report, which collaborates with Gallup and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, highlights key factors such as GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.

Finland retains its position at the top, followed by Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. Notably, Costa Rica and Mexico enter the top ten for the first time, marking a shift in global happiness dynamics. The United States has dropped to its lowest ranking at 24, while the United Kingdom follows closely at 23. Afghanistan continues to be the unhappiest nation, followed by Sierra Leone and Lebanon.

A key takeaway from the report is the increasing importance of trust and social connections in shaping happiness. The study finds that sharing meals, offering social support, and cultivating kindness can significantly improve life satisfaction. A concerning trend, however, is the rising loneliness among young adults, with nearly 19% reporting a lack of social support—a factor contributing to lower happiness levels.

India ranks 118th, demonstrating its community-focused culture, but struggles with perceptions of freedom. The report emphasizes that building stronger community bonds and encouraging caring and sharing can enhance happiness across the globe.
