In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Thane police have arrested 17 individuals under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA), marking a significant milestone in the district's fight against illegal substances. This operation has exposed a vast ganja smuggling network spanning multiple states, with a well-organized distribution chain.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende revealed that the gang, led by Gufran Hannan Sheikh from Titwala-Baneli, had established a robust network across Thane, Kalyan, Badlapur, Solapur, and Pune. The police's action, the first of its kind in the Thane police commissionerate, has disrupted a major drug supply route, seizing a substantial quantity of ganja and weapons.
The investigation, triggered by a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case registered two months ago at Khadakpada police station, led to the arrest of 13 individuals from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and Solapur. The police confiscated 62 kilograms of ganja and weapons during the initial raid. Subsequent interrogations resulted in the recovery of an additional 115 kilograms of ganja, pistols, and vehicles worth Rs 70 lakh.
With five gang members facing 21 criminal cases in various police stations, the Assistant Commissioner of Police Kalyanji Ghete is leading the ongoing investigation. This operation highlights the police's commitment to tackling organized crime and sends a strong message to drug trafficking networks operating in the region. The public can expect further updates as the investigation unfolds, bringing more clarity to this extensive drug smuggling operation.
