Hyderabad Opium Bust: Rs 1 Crore Seized, One Arrested

In a significant drug interdiction, the Rachakonda Police have seized a substantial quantity of opium and poppy straw valued at a staggering Rs 1 crore. This operation, which took place near Keesara, has led to the arrest of Lokesh Bareth, a native of Rajasthan, who was attempting to distribute these illicit substances in the city.

The police intercepted Bareth near the Kundanpally ORR Rotary with 7 kg of opium and 2 kg of poppy straw, meticulously packed into 16 discrete packets. This operation highlights the growing concern over the illegal drug trade's reach and sophistication. Bareth, a former hotel manager, had teamed up with Jagadish Gujjar, a supplier still at large, to distribute opium across Hyderabad, Chennai, and surrounding areas.

Bareth's journey into the drug trade began after he lost his job at the Golden Palm Hotel in Udaipur. His previous employment included working as a sales boy in a textile shop and a delivery boy for Dominos Pizza. The police revealed that this wasn't Bareth's first venture into drug trafficking; he had successfully delivered 2 kg of opium to Hyderabad in August, following the same modus operandi. This recent arrest on October 10th was the result of meticulous intelligence work by the SOT Malkajgiri team and the Keesara Police.

The Rachakonda Police have issued a stern warning about the health risks associated with opium consumption, emphasizing the potential for severe physical and mental health issues. They also reminded citizens of the legal consequences, including imprisonment and, in extreme cases, the death penalty, under the NDPS Act. This operation underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the importance of public awareness and cooperation in creating a drug-free society.
