Over 32,000 Vacancies Across 37 J&K Government Departments: CM Abdullah

Over 32,000 positions remain unfilled across 37 departments of the Jammu and Kashmir government, with the Health and Medical Education Department having the highest number of vacancies at 7,851, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah revealed on Tuesday. The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) and the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) have been tasked with filling 3,727 vacancies since the formation of the new government on October 16 last year, he added while responding to a question in the Assembly.

The Chief Minister, who also oversees the General Administration Department, was addressing a query by Peoples Conference MLA Sajad Gani Lone, who sought details on the total vacancies in various departments as of January 31, as well as the positions referred to the recruitment bodies after the National Conference-led government took office.

As of January 31, there were 32,474 vacant positions, including 2,503 gazetted, 19,214 non-gazetted, and 10,757 multi-tasking staff (MTS) posts. Among these, 738 gazetted, 1,754 non-gazetted, and 1,235 MTS vacancies were referred to the JKSSB and JKPSC after the new government took charge. Specific vacancies included 594 gazetted posts in the School Education Department, 56 in Health and Medical Education, 45 in the Power Department, and 41 in the Horticulture Department.

The distribution of vacancies across departments is as follows: Health and Medical Education (7,851 vacancies), Public Works (Roads and Buildings) (3,759), Animal Husbandry (2,589), Industries and Commerce (2,517), Housing and Urban Development (2,420), Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare (1,340), Power (1,305), Food and Supplies (1,131), Finance (1,009), Revenue (1,004), Jal Shakti (856), and School Education (770). Notably, the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction has no vacancies.

In response to another query, Chief Minister Abdullah also noted that since October 16, the JKPSC collected over Rs 8.44 crore, while the JKSSB gathered more than Rs 5.72 crore in application fees from candidates.
