In the volatile world of Indian politics, where allegiances can shift like the wind, a dramatic exodus is unfolding in Nellore. The once-dominant YSR Congress (YSRCP) is witnessing a mass desertion as its corporators prepare to join the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). This political migration is not just a local phenomenon but a significant setback for the YSRCP, which, until recently, held a commanding position in the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC).
The catalyst for this political realignment is the 'Operation Akarsh' initiative, masterminded by TDP's Nellore Rural MLA, Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy. His strategy has been a resounding success, attracting a substantial number of corporators who were once loyal to the YSRCP. The scale of this defection is staggering; out of the 54 divisions in the NMC, only three corporators, including the Nellore Mayor Potluru Sravanthi and Deputy Mayor Khaleel Ahmed, remain committed to the YSRCP. This is a far cry from the party's triumphant victory in all 54 divisions during the 2021 municipal elections.
The recent State Assembly elections in May marked a turning point, with over 20 YSRCP corporators already defecting to the TDP. The remaining corporators are expected to follow suit by the end of October, leaving the YSRCP with a severely diminished presence in Nellore's political landscape. This rapid decline in support raises questions about the party's future and the factors contributing to such a dramatic shift in loyalty.
A senior YSRCP corporator, speaking anonymously, revealed the disillusionment within the party ranks, stating that they had no choice but to join the TDP due to a perceived lack of support from their own leadership. With former allies turning rivals and a growing sense of abandonment, the YSRCP's challenge is not just to retain its remaining members but also to address the underlying issues that led to this political upheaval.
