In a significant drug enforcement operation, the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) has dealt a substantial blow to illicit drug activities in the city. The police have arrested seven individuals, including two from Southern Ontario, in connection with drug possession and trafficking, seizing a substantial amount of cocaine, fentanyl, and cash in the process.
The operation, which took place on Thursday, saw the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) detectives conclude an investigation into suspected drug trafficking in the community. The Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and K9 Unit then executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) warrant at a residential unit in the Bruce Avenue housing complex, a known location of interest to the police. The search operation resulted in the arrest of seven people found inside the apartment.
During the search, officers discovered and confiscated approximately 90 grams of cocaine, 28 grams of fentanyl, and a substantial sum of cash. The street value of the seized drugs is estimated at $12,000. Two individuals, aged 29 and 36, were charged with multiple offences under the CDSA and the Criminal Code of Canada, including possession of cocaine and fentanyl for trafficking purposes and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. One of the suspects also faces an additional charge for breaching a previous release order related to a separate drug trafficking case earlier this year.
The GSPS encourages anyone with information about drug trafficking in the community to contact the Drug Enforcement Unit directly or anonymously through Sudbury Crime Stoppers. This operation underscores the police's commitment to eradicating drug-related crimes and ensuring the safety of Greater Sudbury residents.
