Gujarat Achieves 95% of NITI Aayog’s TB-Free Target

In 2024, Gujarat made significant progress in its fight against tuberculosis (TB) as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to eliminate the disease. The state has nearly met the ambitious target set by NITI Aayog, achieving 95 per cent of the goal for TB patient registration and treatment success.

Gujarat was assigned the task of identifying and registering 145,000 TB patients in 2024. By the end of the year, the state successfully registered 137,929 patients, demonstrating its commitment to tackling the disease. Of these, 124,581 patients completed their treatment, resulting in a 90.52 per cent treatment completion rate. Additionally, the government provided treatment facilities to 131,501 registered TB patients, ensuring access to essential healthcare services.

Recognizing the financial burden TB treatment places on patients, the Gujarat government has actively implemented the Nikshay Poshan Yojana (NPY) under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program. This scheme provides financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month to each notified TB patient throughout their treatment period. The support is offered either in cash or in-kind, ensuring that all eligible patients receive the necessary aid to continue their treatment without economic hardship.

Beyond medical care, the government has focused on improving nutritional support for TB patients. A total of 10,682 Nikshay Mitras have been registered on the Nikshay portal, helping to distribute 349,534 nutrition kits. This initiative guarantees that patients receive adequate nutrition, which is crucial for their recovery and overall well-being.

To strengthen early detection and treatment efforts, the Government of India launched the “100-Day Intensive TB Eradication Campaign” in December 2024. Gujarat has actively participated in this initiative by including 16 districts and four municipal corporations in the program. As of March 20, 2025, nearly 35.75 lakh people have been screened for TB, leading to the identification of 16,758 new patients.

These efforts highlight Gujarat’s dedication to eliminating TB by ensuring timely diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, financial support, and improved nutrition for patients. Through continued initiatives and strong public health strategies, the state is making substantial progress towards eradicating the disease.
