Massive Meth Bust in Tripura: Uncovering a Borderland Drug Trade

In a dramatic operation, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Customs officials, have struck a significant blow to the narcotics trade in Tripura, seizing a staggering 69.6 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth a whopping Rs 70 crore. This bust, occurring in the Khowai district, is the latest in a series of successful operations targeting the illegal drug trade in the Northeast region.

The drugs, known as 'Yaba' or 'party pills', were hidden in trucks disguised as cement carriers, a tactic that underscores the sophistication of smuggling networks operating in the area. This seizure follows a similar incident in late September, where 60.77 kg of Yaba tablets were recovered in West Tripura, valued at Rs 60 crore. These consecutive operations highlight the determination of security forces to disrupt the drug supply chain, especially during the Durga Puja season when trafficking activities often intensify.

The drugs' journey is believed to have begun in Myanmar, traversing through Mizoram and southern Assam before reaching Tripura. The state's lengthy and porous border with Bangladesh, despite fencing, provides an opportunity for traffickers to smuggle the consignment further, exploiting the border's vulnerabilities. Tripura's Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, has acknowledged the region's challenges, revealing that over 2,700 drug peddlers and 248 consumers have been arrested in the last three years, with a conviction rate under the NDPS Act dropping from 11.7% in 2022-2023 to 5% in 2024.

The ongoing efforts to destroy seized narcotics and disrupt smuggling networks are part of a comprehensive strategy to secure a drug-free Northeast. As the battle against drug trafficking continues, the region's security forces remain vigilant, aiming to dismantle the networks that threaten the peace and well-being of the community.
