In a daring attempt to smuggle drugs into a correctional facility, a former inmate's scheme has landed him back in handcuffs. Raymond Molina-Caraballo, a 28-year-old New Bedford resident, now faces serious drug trafficking charges, including possession with intent to distribute and delivering drugs to a prisoner.
The Bristol County Sheriff's Office's Special Investigations Unit uncovered this plot after receiving word that Molina-Caraballo, despite having outstanding warrants, planned to turn himself in to authorities with a hidden agenda. On August 25, he surrendered at the New Bedford District Court, where a judge ordered his transport to the Dartmouth Jail. However, this was not a routine transfer. Law enforcement officials, suspecting foul play, coordinated a meticulous search upon his arrival.
The search revealed a startling find: a significant stash of suspected cocaine in both crack and powdered forms. Over 11 grams of crack cocaine and nearly 26 grams of powdered cocaine were seized from Molina-Caraballo's possession. This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of contraband in correctional facilities, as Sheriff Paul Heroux emphasized, "Contraband threatens the safety and well-being of everyone within these facilities."
Molina-Caraballo's arraignment took place at the New Bedford District Court on September 26, and he is currently detained at the Bristol County Jail in Dartmouth, awaiting his fate. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ingenuity of smuggling attempts and the constant vigilance required by law enforcement to maintain the integrity of the criminal justice system.
