In a significant step towards a drug-free Tawang, the district's law enforcement and administration convened a crucial meeting to strategize and strengthen their anti-drug measures. The District Level Monthly NCORD (National Coordination and Resource Centre on Drug Abuse) Meeting, held at the DC Office, brought together key officials, including the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Rinchin Leta, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. D.W. Thongon, and representatives from various government departments and agencies.
The meeting highlighted the coordinated efforts of the Tawang Police, who have been actively engaged in anti-drug initiatives. Deputy SP Tasso Kato presented a comprehensive overview, detailing their progress and strategies. The police have successfully installed CCTV cameras at 13 strategic locations, ensuring constant surveillance with the support of local residents. This initiative, according to SP Dr. Thongon, will soon expand to cover the entire district. The meeting also emphasized the importance of public participation, encouraging citizens to report drug-related activities through the MANAS portal, acting as the eyes and ears of the police force.
Addressing the issue of rehabilitation, the officials discussed the proposed Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre. However, it was revealed that the plan for Tawang has been dropped, leaving the district without a dedicated rehabilitation facility. ADC Leta suggested an innovative approach, proposing that the Agriculture Department utilize sprayers and herbicides to eradicate wild cannabis plants, a measure supported by the collective efforts of the SSB, District Police, and local villagers.
As the meeting concluded, the officials' commitment to a drug-free Tawang was evident. With enhanced surveillance, public engagement, and inter-departmental coordination, Tawang is taking proactive steps to combat the drug menace, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for its residents.
