Global Energy Review 2025: Extreme Weather Drives Surge in Energy Demand

The Global Energy Review 2025, released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), highlights the significant impact of extreme weather events on global energy consumption in 2024. Record-high temperatures led to a 20% surge in energy demand, with increased reliance on natural gas, electricity, and coal. This growth was driven by higher cooling needs, industrial consumption, and the expanding electrification of transport.

Electricity demand grew nearly twice as fast as overall energy demand, fueled by rising air conditioning use, industrial activity, and the rapid expansion of data centers. Renewables played a pivotal role in meeting this demand, with solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity seeing record growth. In fact, renewables and nuclear power accounted for 80% of the global electricity generation growth in 2024, with renewables alone supplying 32% of total generation.

The transport sector also saw a substantial increase in electricity consumption, driven by a 25% rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales. However, despite these advancements in clean energy, CO2 emissions from the energy sector continued to rise, with natural gas and coal contributing significantly to the increase.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for a transition to cleaner energy sources. The continued adoption of solar, wind, nuclear power, and electric vehicles is essential for reducing emissions and fostering a more sustainable energy future.
