In a significant blow to drug trafficking in Penang, the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) has disrupted a syndicate's operations with the arrest of three men and a substantial cannabis seizure. The operation, which took place in Pantai Jerejak and Sungai Petani, has shed light on a sophisticated network spanning international borders.
The raid, led by the NCID, began with a tip-off and surveillance, culminating in the interception of a vehicle in Pantai Jerejak. Inside, officers discovered a staggering 49.38 kg of cannabis, divided into 65 slabs and valued at RM153,078. The two men, aged 33 and 43, put up a brief struggle before being subdued. This successful seizure is equivalent to supplying approximately 98,700 addicts, a startling figure that underscores the scale of the syndicate's operations.
The subsequent raid at a Sungai Petani residence led to the capture of the third suspect, the older brother of one of the men, believed to be the mastermind. This operation has not only resulted in the seizure of a substantial amount of cannabis but also in the detention of individuals with alleged high-level involvement in the syndicate.
"We are now tracking down other members, including potential links to international drug trafficking rings," said Southwest District Police chief ACP Sazalee Adam. This statement highlights the ongoing efforts to dismantle the entire network and underscores the transnational nature of the drug trade. With the remand of the trio, the investigation now focuses on uncovering the full extent of this syndicate's reach and its potential connections to larger international criminal organizations.
