In recent times, Telangana has witnessed a disturbing increase in hate crimes, with elderly individuals becoming frequent targets. A particularly alarming incident occurred in Kagaznagar town of Komaram Bheem Asifabad district, where an 84-year-old man selling bread on a bicycle was assaulted by three youths.

The Incident

The elderly vendor, known for his daily rounds selling bread, was confronted by three young men in a residential area of Kagaznagar. Eyewitnesses reported that the youths initially engaged the man in a verbal altercation, accusing him of encroaching on their territory. The situation quickly escalated when one of the youths overturned the man's bicycle, causing his goods to scatter. Subsequently, the trio physically assaulted the elderly man, leaving him with multiple injuries.

Community Response

Local residents intervened, rescuing the victim and alerting the authorities. The elderly man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries. Community members expressed outrage over the incident, highlighting a growing concern over the safety of vulnerable individuals in the area.

Official Action

The Kagaznagar police have registered a case against the three youths under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to assault and causing hurt. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities assuring the public of swift action to deter such incidents in the future.

This attack is not an isolated event. Telangana has seen a series of violent acts targeting elderly individuals:

• Hyderabad Incident: In March 2025, a 62-year-old grocery store owner, Zakir Khan, was beaten to death by a group of youngsters over a dispute regarding space in front of his store in Baba Nagar, Kanchanbagh.

  Alwal Incident: In October 2024, a 65-year-old man named Anjaneyulu was fatally assaulted by a motorcyclist after requesting him to slow down while he was crossing the road. The incident was captured on CCTV, showing the biker attacking the elderly man, leading to his death.

  Medak District Incident: In September 2024, a beggar was brutally attacked and killed by three individuals in Gomaram village after being falsely accused of theft.

  The assault on the 84-year-old bread seller in Kagaznagar underscores a troubling trend of violence against elderly individuals in Telangana. It highlights the urgent need for community awareness, stricter law enforcement, and initiatives to protect vulnerable populations from such heinous acts.
