The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has launched SARAT (Search and Rescue Aid Tool) Version 2 to significantly enhance search-and-rescue operations in the Indian Ocean. This upgraded satellite-based distress alert system is designed to assist vessels, aircraft, and individuals in remote or high-risk maritime areas.
SARAT Version 2 introduces several key enhancements, including more accurate search areas, improved data visualization, and plans for future upgrades such as enhanced surface current and wind prediction accuracy. Developed by the ESSO-INCOIS under MoES as part of the Make in India initiative, SARAT is a vital tool for maritime safety.
The system tracks 60 different object types, including people, rafts, boats, and aircraft, offering accurate predictions of search areas for up to 10 days based on wind, ocean currents, and drifting buoys. The user-friendly interface features interactive maps, SMS/email alerts, and even local language support, making it especially useful for fishermen operating in the region.
INCOIS, the organization behind SARAT, is a renowned institution for ocean disaster management and early warnings, recognized by UNESCO as a top tsunami service provider. In 2025, INCOIS was honored with the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar for excellence in disaster management, further highlighting its commitment to saving lives at sea.
