In a startling revelation, the Ernakulam Rural police have reported a surge in narcotics-related cases, with a staggering 3,209 incidents under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in just nine months. This figure, a significant jump from the 2,037 cases of the previous year, underscores a growing trend in Kerala's drug landscape.
The data reveals a 62% increase in arrests, with 3,397 individuals detained this year compared to 2,217 in 2023. Among the seized items, the quantity of ganja stands out, with 475 kg confiscated, nearly double last year's total. The police also intercepted various synthetic drugs, including MDMA, methamphetamine, hashish oil, and heroin, indicating a diverse and thriving illegal drug market.
The Thadiyittaparambu police made a significant contribution, seizing 90 kg of suspected ganja and arresting three alleged smugglers. The Nedumbassery police also made a notable catch, uncovering 24 kg of ganja cleverly concealed in a cycle tube. These incidents highlight the ingenuity of smuggling methods and the challenges faced by law enforcement.
Investigations suggest that ganja, sourced from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, is sold at a premium in Kerala, with prices soaring from 2,0003,000 to 25,00030,000 per kg. The police have attributed the surge in cases to heightened surveillance, with repeat offenders facing stringent action under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. This proactive approach aims to curb the growing drug trade and protect the state's youth from the perils of substance abuse.
