In a bold move to tackle the drug menace in Telangana, Health Minister C Damodar Raja Narsimha has set an ambitious goal: a drug-free state. This vision, unveiled during a review meeting at the Secretariat, emphasizes the crucial role of community involvement in eradicating drug addiction.
The Minister stressed that the government's efforts alone are insufficient and called for a united front. He urged the police and health departments to collaborate, with the police taking the lead in identifying and apprehending drug offenders while the health department focuses on treatment and rehabilitation. This coordinated approach aims to strike at the heart of the drug problem.
Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TANB) Director Sandeep Sandilya provided insights into their strategy. He explained that identified drug addicts are brought before a magistrate and then transferred to de-addiction centers for treatment. This process, he believes, is a crucial step in breaking the cycle of addiction. The minister also revealed plans to strengthen de-addiction facilities, including a state-of-the-art center at the Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda.
To ensure a drug-free Telangana, Narsimha advocates for a comprehensive awareness campaign. He suggests educating parents and teachers about the behavioral signs of drug abuse and the importance of early intervention. The Minister's vision includes widespread programs in schools, colleges, and hospitals to raise awareness and prevent drug experimentation. By involving all sections of society, the Minister believes Telangana can win the war against drugs, fostering a healthier, safer community for its citizens.
