Hyderabad's Traffic Woes: Carpooling to the Rescue?

Hyderabad, a bustling metropolis, faces a daily challenge with over 91 lakh vehicles on its roads, a number that continues to grow by 3,000 daily. The Cyberabad traffic police, in a strategic move, have turned their attention to the IT sector, a significant contributor to the city's traffic congestion. With a directive to IT companies, the police propose a novel solution: carpooling.

The IT corridor, housing clusters of tech firms in areas like Gachibowli, Madhapur, HITEC City, Raidurg, and the Financial District, is a prime target for traffic management. Currently, these companies operate their fleet of vehicles for employee transportation, while some employees commute in their cars. The traffic police's proposal suggests a shift to a more efficient system, introducing buses for each IT park, accommodating 20 to 30 companies. This approach could significantly reduce the number of vehicles on the road while increasing passenger capacity.

Joint Commissioner of Cyberabad traffic police, Ghajarao Bhupal, highlights the practicality of this initiative, "The carpooling system is a promising solution as most IT firms share similar work hours and are located in close proximity. It's a cost-effective strategy for the companies as well." With at least 60 congestion points and 30 IT parks in Cyberabad, this proposal could bring much-needed relief. The Mindspace IT park, located opposite IKEA, is set to pilot this model, with a comprehensive study of employee transportation needs underway.

The potential impact is substantial, with estimates suggesting a 20% reduction in traffic congestion if successfully implemented. Road safety advocate Lokendra Singh illustrates this with an example, "Mindspace currently utilizes 250 vehicles for employee transportation. With the proposed bus system, the same number of employees could be accommodated with just 50 buses." As the city awaits the pilot study's results, this innovative approach offers a glimmer of hope for a more efficient and less congested Hyderabad.
