Massive Seizure of Banned Cough Syrup in Sonbhadra

In a significant operation, a joint task force comprising Robertsganj Police, the Special Operation Group, and the excise department intercepted a substantial illegal shipment in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday night. The haul, valued at a staggering Rs 3.5 crore, consisted of 1,19,675 bottles of cough syrup, each 100 ml, containing the prohibited narcotic codeine.

The operation was initiated based on intelligence about a banned drug consignment's movement. The police and excise team strategically blocked the Varanasi-Shaktinagar highway near Police Line-Churk, stopping two trucks. Upon inspection, the trucks were found to be carrying the banned syrup, cleverly concealed within snack and chip cartons. The bottles were packed into 399 plastic bags, ready for distribution.

Anil Kumar, Sonbhadra ASP (headquarters), confirmed the seizure and the presence of codeine, a controlled substance under the NDPS Act. The authorities registered case no. 1054/2025 at Robertsganj Police Station, charging the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the NDPS Act. Three individuals from Madhya Pradesh, Hemant Pal, Brajmohan Shivhare, and Ramgopal Dhakad, were arrested, with a fourth, Ram, from Jharkhand, also implicated.

This seizure highlights the ongoing battle against the illegal drug trade, which often uses ingenious methods to transport contraband. The operation's success underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration and timely intelligence in disrupting such illicit activities. With the accused in custody, the investigation will now focus on unraveling the full extent of this drug network and bringing all involved to justice.
