The sunny beaches and vibrant tourism of Kerala, a coastal state in India, belie a growing concern: a significant rise in LSD use. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has sounded the alarm, revealing that Kerala is now among the top markets for this potent hallucinogenic drug. With 924 LSD blots seized in 2024, Kerala ranks fourth in India for such confiscations, following Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and Goa.
This surge in LSD use is particularly alarming due to the drug's powerful psychological effects. The NCB report highlights the drug's appeal among youth, who often seek its mind-altering properties. The report suggests that the coastal and tourist-centric nature of Kerala and Goa may contribute to the increased recreational use of LSD among locals and visitors.
The NCB's Cochin unit has been proactive in combating this issue, seizing a substantial amount of LSD in January 2024 from Ernakulam, where seven individuals were found in possession of 326 LSD blots, totaling 7.59 grams. This incident underscores the growing challenge of LSD trafficking and use in the region.
The NCB report also sheds light on the broader issue of drug trafficking along coastal routes, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance. With synthetic drugs and their precursor chemicals increasingly smuggled through coastal states like Kerala, the fight against drug trafficking requires a comprehensive approach. This includes not only law enforcement but also education and community engagement to address the root causes of drug use and prevent its spread.
