Secunderabad Gyms: Unlicensed Cardiac Drugs Seized

In a recent crackdown on illegal drug use in the fitness industry, Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) officials have uncovered a disturbing trend in Secunderabad's gyms. Acting on a tip-off, the authorities raided an unlicensed premises in Namalagundu, seizing a significant stash of 66 vials of Mephentermine Sulphate injections, known by the brand names Termin and Termiva. This raid exposes a clandestine operation catering to bodybuilders seeking an artificial edge.

These powerful cardiac stimulant drugs, intended for medical use during surgery to manage hypotension, are being misused and sold at exorbitant prices, ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per vial. Gym owners and trainers are the alleged culprits, distributing these drugs to enhance physical performance and endurance by increasing noradrenaline release and constricting blood vessels to raise blood pressure. This illegal practice not only violates the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, punishable by up to five years in prison, but also poses severe health risks. Misuse can lead to cardiovascular complications and even death, exacerbated by reports of injection reuse, which increases the risk of infectious diseases.

The DCA's Director-General, Shahnawaz Qasim, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that only certified medical professionals should handle such potent medications. This operation is just the beginning, as authorities plan further raids to eradicate the illegal sale of cardiovascular drugs in gyms, protecting public health and ensuring these substances are used responsibly and for their intended medical purposes. The DCA's swift action sends a clear message: exploiting dangerous drugs for performance enhancement will not be tolerated, and those involved will face the full force of the law.
