The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a 16-day statewide agitation called the ‘Janakrosha Yatra’ in Karnataka, beginning on April 7, 2025. The yatra commenced from Chamundi Hills in Mysuru following religious rituals, with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi leading the inaugural event. This mass outreach campaign is positioned as a protest against the Congress-led Karnataka government's policies, which the BJP claims have led to price hikes and poor governance.
A major focus of the yatra is to highlight the rising cost of living, particularly increased prices of essential commodities like milk, electricity, and diesel. BJP leaders allege that the current government under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has failed to protect the interests of the common people and has burdened them with repeated price hikes.
Another key issue the BJP is raising during this yatra is the government’s decision to extend a 4% reservation to Muslims in government contracts, which the party has strongly opposed. According to BJP leaders, this decision is unconstitutional and a politically motivated move that compromises merit-based opportunities.
The yatra will pass through several districts across South and North Karnataka, including Mandya, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Mangaluru, and more. It aims to connect with people at the grassroots level and mobilize support against the current government’s decisions. BJP leaders like R Ashok and Chalavadi Narayanswamy have been vocal in criticizing the Congress administration for alleged corruption, mismanagement, and policies that they claim hurt the interests of the general public.
The ‘Janakrosha Yatra’ is seen as a pre-election mobilization strategy to regain public trust and prepare for upcoming electoral battles in the state, by focusing on key socio-economic and political issues currently facing Karnataka.
